Dear Parents,
Welcome to a great and exciting first grade year. This year will be like no other any of us has ever experience as education evolves to coexist with the current pandemic. I hope to make this as smooth of a year as possible as we roll with the punches, so to speak. I do want to let you know I am on maternity leave until November 4th and Mrs. Philpot will be the teacher during the first part of the school year until I return.
First grade is an essential turning point in your child's education. Your child will transition from "knowing their alphabet" to "learning to read". This year I will be keeping my grade book online so you will be able to access it at home. Writing in complete sentences is also something that is going to be very crucial this year. We will call them three star sentences, meaning the sentence contains a noun, verb, and adjective. It is very exciting to watch your children grow throughout the year and I truly hope you enjoy the experience.
I am teaming up with the other first grade teachers, Mrs. Young and Mrs. Goodman, to ensure that you and your child will gain the most from his/her experience this year. This is my tenth year teaching here at Stephensen Elementary. If you have been apart of our school community during these past nine years you will know me by my maiden name Miss Vaughn. I am very excited to be teaching first grade, as it is my favorite! Teaching is a passion of mine and has been my dream job since I was eight years old.
I would like to take this opportunity to introduce myself. I am a 2007 graduate from Mountain Home High School. I attended Boise State University and received my B.A. in Elementary Education with a minor in Music in May of 2011. I also finished my Masters in Education with an emphasis from Augustana University in May of 2018. I am currently working towards my Educational Doctorate in Educational Technology Masters and am hoping to complete it in May 2022. I was recently married over the summer and am expecting my first child in August. I grew up as a military B.R.A.T. with both of my parents serving active duty in the Air Force. I consider myself from Mountain Home as it is where I spent the majority of my childhood. With being a child of the Air Force community I understand that you as a parent may have a concern when it comes to TDYs, PCSing, deployments and other aspects that come along with being a military family. Please do not hesitate to speak with me about questions or concerns you may have for your child. I will do my best to support you and lead you to resources.
The best way to get a hold of me throughout the school year, if not in person, is through ClassDojo. If you have not registered for our class page please do so as I will not be sending home paper copies of newsletters or class updates. ClassDojo not only allows us to communicate but it also allows me share pictures and videos of your child with you. I check ClassDojo several times a day and I try to reply immediately.
Again, thank you for the opportunity to work with your child. I am very excited to see their growth throughout the year.
Sincerely,
Mrs. McCarthy
